Sound

Sound / Approach

BEYOND A SINGLE TONE.

Within one sound,
there are many sounds.

What I work with
is not a single sound alone,
but the “resonance” born when sounds overlap.

Measuring frequencies,
building intervals,
listening to the layering of overtones.

Being in harmony as numbers.
Being beautiful to the ear.
And how the body feels it.

Moving back and forth among all of these,
I build a single resonance.

Pure intonation is one of the approaches I explore.

When performing with the piano or other tuned instruments,
I check that instrument’s reference pitch and tuning system,
and, looking at the frequency and overtones of each crystal bowl,
design the resonance of the whole.

Even with the same note name,
every crystal bowl resonates differently.

That is why I never decide on sound by numbers alone.
Nor do I rely on my ears alone.

Measure. Listen. Feel.

Layering these three,
I explore the possibilities of resonance born in the “in-between” of sound and sound.

How I write

Placing beauty and verification side by side.

Known

What is confirmed

Tuning calculations, the structure of overtones, values obtained by measurement. I write them together with sources and methods of measurement.

Experience

My experience

What I felt while performing or listening. I write it as it is, as personal sensation.

Open

What is not yet known

Hypotheses and questions. When something has no answer yet, I say so.
