Lately, with the crystal bowls

that have newly arrived at the New York Temple,

I have been slowly starting to make sound again.

The crystal bowl is a truly fascinating instrument:

even if there are over 1,000 bowls at a trade show,

I can’t find even ten bowls among them

that play a harmony I’m truly satisfied with.

If I try to match the pitch perfectly, I may find five at most.

Going by sound alone, sometimes there are a few more,

but the look or the alchemy doesn’t match…

and then, even though the notes should be right,

a sense that something is “off” remains.

The new bowls are all lined up like this,

but they are split into three or four harmony groups,

so they can’t all be played together 😢

Watching how well they match, dividing them into groups,

and creating sound as I play each group—

that time is so much fun!!

Finally, my current favorite pair.

I have a feeling these two will be going to a new home in Japan…
