Fashion / Costume Creation
From the body,opening the world.
When I make clothing,
the first thing I picture is the person who will wear it.
The lines of the body.
The way they stand.
How the fabric moves as they walk.
The relationship between skin and color.
The expression that appears in the light.
Every body holds a beauty
that belongs to that person alone.
MEGAMi begins with finding that beauty
and opening it up through clothing.
When making jewelry,
I would look at a stone and search for the form in which it looks most beautiful.
Clothing is somehow similar.
I look at the person, and I feel.
I layer fabric over the body.
I place color.
I move.
Watching what appears in the “in-between” of the person and the material,
I shape the form little by little.
THE BODY BECOMES THE CANVAS.
The name MEGAMi (“goddess”) carries my wish
that the beauty and individuality within each person
may come forward more freely.
Strength and softness.
Stillness and playfulness.
The moment you put on the garment,
the way you stand changes a little.
The way you walk changes.
The way you see yourself changes.
I feel that clothing, while wrapping the body,
has the power to express what is inside a person to the world outside.
COSTUME AS PERFORMANCE.
Today, MEGAMi’s Creation
has expanded into costumes for the stage and for sacred offerings.
When I perform,
the body, too, becomes part of the work.
The line drawn when an arm moves.
Fabric catching the wind.
Color seen in the light.
The relationship with architecture and nature.
And the sound resonating there.
Just as sound spreads from the body into space,
clothing spreads from the body’s movement into space.
Sound, body, clothing, place.
The moment they resonate together,
the Performance itself becomes a single landscape.
MEGAMi / CREATION
From stone to jewelry.
From body to clothing.
From sound to space.
The materials change,
but what I do has always been much the same.
Looking closely.
Feeling.
Finding the possibilities within.
And opening what has not yet taken form
into the visible world.
MEGAMi, too,
is one of my ways to ALCHEMIZE.
People and fabric.
Body and color.
Sound and costume.
Place and Performance.
What is born from that “in-between,”
I give form to as clothing.
