EXPRESSION / DEVOTION

To express. To offer.

Sensations born within me, carried into sound, painting, clothing, jewelry, and performance.

Sound that is born from within me,
and sound returned to the place it came from.

For me, performing moves back and forth
between “expression” and “prayer.”

On stage, it is a work of art.
In a sacred offering, it is directed to that land, that time, that place.

What flows through both
is listening to what is here and now,
and letting it resonate as sound.

Where the two overlap,
that is mogmin.’s Performance.

Sacred Offering

An offering beginswith knowing the place.

When preparing for an offering performance,
I begin by learning about the place.

The deities enshrined there.
The stories handed down in that land.
The people who have lived there.
Its nature and architecture, and the time the place has gathered.

I go there in person,
feel the air, listen to the sounds,
and consider what kind of resonance I want to offer to that place.

From there, I choose the crystal bowls
and shape the combinations of tones and the flow of the performance.

When several performers make the offering together,
I also build the overall structure
so that each sound and role resonates within one space.

And on the day itself,
I listen closely to everything present in that moment:
wind, birdsong, rain, light, the presence of people, even silence.

The sounds I have prepared,
and the sounds I meet for the first time that day.
Receiving both,
I offer the performance born in that place, at that time.

For me, an offering performance is a Performance
that includes knowing the place, feeling it, choosing the sounds,
and finally entrusting it all to that place.

Creation

I CREATE WHAT I FEEL.

I feel. And then, I create.

When I make something,
it always begins with a small premonition.

A color that suddenly comes to mind.
A sound I feel I have heard somewhere.
A shape glimpsed in the light.
Something beautiful that has no name yet.

“If only something like this existed in the world.”

From the moment I think that,
my creation begins.

Sometimes it becomes sound,
sometimes jewelry.
Sometimes clothing,
or a photograph, or a space.

Depending on what I want to make,
the materials and methods change freely.

What existed only in my mind
slowly takes on an outline,
becomes something you can touch,
becomes sound,
and appears before someone.

I love that moment.

Imagining what does not yet exist in this world,
and making it real, one piece at a time.

What is born this way
may someday touch someone’s senses,
and from there, something new begins again.

Including that whole chain of connection,
I think I have always been
utterly absorbed in the act of “creating.”
